Parish History:

The first Mass was celebrated in Canton in 1888, and the first church was built in 1891.  In 1892, an incident occurred that brought the tiny community into national notice.  Children were playing during school recess when they claimed to see a vison in the window of the church steeple-the Virgin Mary holding a baby.  Word of the vision spread, and even doubters soon became convinced of its presence.  In a few short weeks, people from near and far traveled to the community seeking a miracle through contact with the vision in the window.  Cures by the score were reported during that summer, until the Church hierarchy stepped in and removed the window, taking it to Winona. This ended the "Miracle at Canton", which soon slipped into the past, with few remembering it.
